Vertical Studio Elective 01:

Participatory Design

The Vertical Studio Elective is a module that brings all 3 years of Darch students to embark on a project together.

Participatory design is an approach to design attempting to actively involve all stakeholders in the design process to help ensure the result meets their needs and is usable.

For this project, we had to turn the unused void deck spaces below the HDBs into a space that can be used by everyone of all ages, for them to interact with each other.

The site is located at Telok Blangah Drive

Participatory Design is to involve all stakeholders in the design process, thus we had to go down to the site to interview residents on their opinions about the void decks.

After interviewing the residents, we came up with ideas on how to improve the void deck based on the residents opinions. We complied the opinions and came up with a course-based structure to satisfy the needs of the residents.

We went to the nearby community centre to gather more opinions and also what the residents think of the idea.

The final product: An interactive void-deck classroom.

The interactive classroom turns the previously un-programmed void deck space to become an interactive and interchangeable space where residents can take ownership of the space itself and use it for different programmes and functions

Parametric Design

Parametric design is a process based on algorithmic thinking that enables the expression of parameters and rules that, together, define, encode and clarify the relationship between design intent and design response.

For this project, we were given the task of redesigning the roof of our Architecture Building, W5A using parametric design. We were taught how to use the parametric softwares, Grasshopper and Rhino to complete this project.

We then came together as a group to test the different variations and to see which variation worked the best. We used Daylight Autonomy to test the different variants.
