Primer one is a introductory project that teaches about the importance of the design process, less so about the end product. Through a structured coursework, students will be led weekly through a process-driven design development using the Fibonacci sequence as the design driver for the cryptex.

The planes, solids and lines are placed at a slanted angle that complements each other to form a sense of rhythm. On the boundaries of the cryptex, the materials are placed in a horizontal and vertical manner to show a different sense of rhythm.

I then explored containment in the next few design models. As seen in the cryptex, the horizontal and vertical planes and solids seem to contain and trap the slanted materials in the middle.

I had also incorporated an idea of a vortex into the cryptex that can be seen in the 21 x 21 square.

The vortex is formed by the slanted planes and solids. The slanted materials give a sense that the cryptex is ‘turning’.

In the designing of the cryptex, I used ideas of Rhythm and Containment in the design process.

In the first few design models, I explored different types of rhythm.

In the design of the cryptex, the middle of the cryptex shows some ideas of rhythm, as shown by the repeating pattern of certain planes and lines.
