Primer Two:  Scars in                   the Ground

Primer Two is a project that focuses on

shaping internal spaces rather than the form

of the Architecture itself.

Students will be designing their first piece of Architecture that consists of a composition of spaces and the circulation through these spaces that manipulates light and materiality to heighten the user’s senses.

Most importantly, a piece of Architecture that tells a story.

Site Analysis

In the first space of uncertainty, which is the entrance, I decided to use tall walls, slanted roof and a narrow pathway to make the entrance precarious to walk through. In addition, as the entrance is slanted, when looked at straight on, people would not know what to expect in the entrance.

In the next space of confusion, I used different placements of the strips from the ground and different heights of the strips to create a sense of confusion.

I decided to use disorder in the space of confusion and order in the space of hope to create a contrast between the negative and positive space.

In the last space of hope, the area is no longer covered with strips. This gives a sense that the metal strips are not weighing people down anymore, simulating that the civilians are free from the control of the Japanese. As this is a positive space, I have also introduced the element of water to make the place calm.

Final Model
Sook Ching Massacre Sites
Uncertainty
Confusion
Hope

I have designed a memorial which is a place of remembrance.

Firstly, the 3 emotions I have chosen are Uncertainty, Confusion and Hope which are from the story of Hu Guan Ren, a civilian that personally witnessed the war.

I started off by researching and locating the places of the Sook Ching massacre sites, drawing lines towards the site of Changi chapel. I then realized there was an intersection made at the site from the 4 massacre sites, Changi beach, Punggol, Tanah Merah and Sentosa.

I chose to design a pre-chapel experience as I wanted people to feel how the civilians felt during the war before going into the chapel to learn about the history of the war.
